Job Description for 3D Artist (Character Modeller/Texturer)

  • Location: Eurocom House, Derby
  • Reporting to: Lead Artist/Project Manager

Main purpose of 3D Artist (Character Modeller/Texturer)

Produce art assets in line with project requirements.

General duties and responsibilities

  1. Create high quality graphical content consistent with the style and vision of the game.
  2. Be able to meet schedules and artistic standards in a professional manner.
  3. Report back to the Lead Artist/Project Manager on progress and raise any other issues that may need to be addressed.
  4. Work collaboratively with artists and programmers and actively contribute to the development process.
  5. Undertake research prior to the commencement of a new project to support future project tasks/activities.
  6. To carry out any other duties as may reasonably be required.

Specific duties and responsibilites

  1. Model in-game characters with effective use of polygon budget.
  2. Model high poly characters to the required standard and level of detail.
  3. Create UV map with good layout, use of space and minimal texture distortion.
  4. Produce normal maps and surface bakes.
  5. Create textures to the appropriate style and standard.

Skills

  • An intermediate to advanced level of knowledge using Maya or Max.
  • An intermediate to advanced level of knowledge using Photoshop.
  • An intermediate to advanced level of knowledge of ZBrush would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of human and animal anatomy plus cloth and drapery would be beneficial.
  • A good understanding of underlying mesh construction techniques for joint deformation and facial animation, etc.

Experience

  • Previous experience in a similar industry would be highly desirable but not essential.
  • Experience in creating high quality textures.
  • Good interpersonal skills and experience of working in a creative team.
  • Self-disciplined and proactive approach to work.
  • Able to promote good practice.
  • Willing to share knowledge/experience with others, particularly juniors/trainees.
  • Keep up-to-date with technological/game advancements and knowledge of games generally.

Qualifications

  • An art related qualification would be desirable but not essential.
